If you are planning to get married in Hawaii, or maybe you are looking to create a Hawaiian or tropical theme to your wedding,
Hawaiian wedding rings are a great way of expressing your commitment to your loved one.
The Heirloom jewelry style is probably the most common of traditional Hawaiian wedding ring styles. Back in the late 1800’s queen Victoria gave a hand engraved bracelet to Princess Lili’uokalani as a gift , thus beginning a tradition.
Later on as a Queen, Lili’uokalani would often be seen wearing the bracelet around the islands thus making it a popular style in Hawaii.
Hawaiian wedding rings are relatively wide styled rings usually made of white, yellow or rose gold that typically measure around 10mm for men and approximately 8mm for women. Although in some cases Hawaiian wedding rings can be made of titanium or platinum, the most common metal is 14 karat gold.
What distinguishes Hawaiian rings from other traditional styles are the ornate patterns that are distinctive to the land’s native heritage. Some of these are hand tooled patterns of the Plumeria ( local flower ), leaves, wreaths, personalized scrollwork writing, and sometimes old English swirls and patterns. There are also many different gemstones that can be set in the rings as well.
Heirloom rings are actually intended for both the bride and groom
and are often made of solid gold.
It is a popular choice of many to have inlaid scrollwork that is made of mother-of-pearl, onyx or enamel in which the specific pattern is identical on both rings. The only difference between both rings is that the groom’s is a bit wider.
The scrollwork on Hawaiian rings tend to vary in styles as it is usually a specific font or design that is unique to the family tradition in which a particular jeweler may come from.
This allows for a very diverse set of styles and patterns such as Royal Maile or Na Hoku which are well known and popular styles in Hawaii.
You can of course have anything you want written on your wedding rings to express your feelings for your loved one, however you may also want to opt for some classic and traditional phrases in the beautiful Hawaiian language to express your love.
Some popular examples would be: Aloha – “Love”, Nani – “Beauty”, Me ke aloha – “With love”, Ho’oheno – “To cherish”,Laule’a – “Happiness”, just to name a few.
There is also a more contemporary Hawaiian wedding ring style that offers an alternative to Heirloom jewelry. These are traditional hand made gold flower rings, that feature some very ornate, intricately detailed patterns such as orchids, roses, and hibiscus.
Again as with Heirloom rings, you can select to have the patterns inlaid with enamel, mother-of-pearl and also with a variety of pearls, diamonds or gemstones.
Hawaiian jewelers are highly respected craftsmen in which they strive to preserve a deep sense of heritage , tradition and love for their land in the designs of their hand made jewelry.
